This UWC short course series emerges from Dr. Nandita Dinesh’s book Creative Writing and the Experiences of Others. Nandita is an alumna of UWC Mahindra College and has taught at the United World Colleges in India, Armenia, and USA.


Designed for participants 18 and older
, Write the World offers strategies that participants can use to engage — ethically, responsibly, and humbly — with current events.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • Online, synchronous sessions at the days and times mentioned above. The course runs a total of 16 hours. Please make sure to check the time zone conversion!

    • Anyone 18 years or older

    • Anyone comfortable engaging in English

    • Anyone willing to experiment with writing

    • Past participants of Write the World are welcome to return! While some of the strategies we explore might be the same as what you were introduced to, exercises will be scaffolded differently for Write the World alumni.

  • In addition to the focus areas below, all sessions will include time to get to know your peers and to reflect on the concepts we’ve been exploring each day.

    • Session 1: getting to know each other and establishing an understanding of the course

    • Session 2: introduction to, and experimentation with, autoethnography

    • Session 3: introduction to the idea of banalities and experimenting with this approach to writing about current events

    • Session 4: introduction to creating interactive texts that give readers choices in how they engage with your work + introduction to the capstone project.

    • Session 5: continue working on capstone project with 1:1 support + final presentations

  • Absolutely not! As long as you are willing to play, learn, and experiment, you are welcome.

  • The course will primarily be conducted in English. However, participants will be welcome to write in the language of their choice (and use online translators when it comes time to share their work).

  • Yes! Participants need to attend all sessions and complete their capstone project + presentation.

  • Full scholarships are only available to participants who come via partner organizations. If you are part of an organization that might want to partner, please write to writetheworld@shortcourse.uwc.org

    There are two fee options for this course:

    • USD 50: covers the cost of one individual’s participation

    • USD 100: covers one person’s fee, subsidizes costs for others, and includes a one-year subscription to Grey Zones, which offers monthly, virtual Write the World gatherings even after this short course ends

    Please note:

    • The fee cannot be paid in installments. The entire fee must be paid before you begin the course

    • The applicant is responsible for ensuring that they are able to make international payments. Payments are accepted via Paypal, Zelle, Venmo, or credit card transactions via Nandita's website.
