This unique two-hour workshop is a collaboration between culinary storyteller Chef Ranjan Dey and interdisciplinary artist-educator Dr. Nandita Dinesh.

Using spices and creative writing as the mediums for engagement, this workshop invites audiences in the Bay Area to practically explore how culinary and literary ingredients from the Indian subcontinent can catalyze new forms of storytelling.

Currently accepting registrations for second Saturdays in August, September, & October. 1-3 PM. New Delhi Restaurant, San Francisco.

  • The workshop will take place on the second Saturday of each month, from 1 to 3 PM, at New Delhi Restaurant, 160 Ellis Street, San Francisco.

    We are currently accepting registrations for:

    • Saturday, August 9

    • Saturday, September 13

    • Saturday, October 11

    The location is accessible via public transport and valet parking is available at a discounted rate from Hotel Nikko next door.

  • Anyone 15 and over is welcome. Folks younger than 18 should be accompanied by at least one adult.

    You do not need to be a writer to participate. All we require is a willingness to learn and experiment.

    We invite you to join in groups. Whether its members from your household or your workplace, our gathering could give you new ways to engage with each other.

  • Structure: we will begin with conversation starters for you to get to know others in the room. Then, you will be offered creative writing prompts that invite engagement with Indian spices and texts. There will be opportunities for you to share extracts from the writing you’ve created. We will end with delicious chai and samosas.

    Language: while the workshop will be conducted in English, you will be welcome to write in the language of your choice. When sharing extracts, you will be requested to translate what you’re sharing into English.

    Tools: you will be invited to write by hand, using physical materials provided to you at the workshop. If you prefer writing on laptops, phones, or other devices, you are welcome to bring those along.

  • The two-hour experience — including community building, curated engagement with storytelling, and chai + samosas — costs $50 per person.

    Folks who register for all three sessions in August, September, and October receive a discounted price of $135.
